Hanoi’s Old Quarter to undergo trial pedestrianisation

Hanoi authorities are proposing to pedestrianise large areas of Hoan Kiem Lake and the Old Quarter, an official said.

Better Impression

Nguyen Quoc Hoa, Chairman of Hoan Kiem District People’s Committee said from this year, Hang Buom, Ma May, and Luong Ngoc Quyen streets would be pedestrianised at weekends, with a plan to roll-out the policy to other areas in Hoan Kiem District if it proved successful.

According to Hoa, the pedestrianisation of the Hanoi Old Quarter would help improve the capital city’s image.

“After trying to struggling to preserve the Old Quarter, the municipal authorities will draft a roadmap to pedestrianise streets around Hoan Kiem and Trang Tien Street.”

Pavements are currently clogged with parked motorbikes and products sold by retail outlest, Hoa said, noting that the new pedestrianised streets would create a perfect environment for promoting the sale of Vietnamese traditional products.

Lieutenant-General Nguyen Duc Nhanh, Director of Hanoi Police Department, said, “Vehicles travelling through the Old Quarter make it difficult for pedestrians, especially foreign tourists.”

He welcomed the proposal believing it would be better for people to walk, and would act as a spur for retail sales along the earmarked streets.

“Hoan Kiem Lake is a unique part of Hanoi that requires continual preservation. In order to create a better environment around the lake, streets in the surrounding areas should be pedestrianised,” he added.

Traffic plans

According to Mr. Hoa, drastic measures should be taken to ensure both locals and tourists found it easy to travel.

Municipal authorities have requested local police and transportation officials to devise plans to deal with new traffic flows, he elaborated.

He said that the city plans to force heavy vehicles to only use routes outside the Old Quarter. Two two-storey parking lots will be built in Tran Nhat Duat and Tran Quang Khai for people to park before entering the Old Quarter.

Greater emphasis would have to be put on better public transport, with increased buses and taxis allowed to operate in the surrounding areas, along with construction of new parking lots, he added.

World’s largest cave in Vietnam to be introduced in 60 countries

The world’s first 3-dimension scientific reportage is about Vietnam’s Son Doong cave and it will be broadcast in 60 countries on June 25.

The 3D reportage was produced by Japan’s Kyodo Film and will be broadcast on Japan’s NHK World TV in 60 countries, according to officials from Quang Binh province, the home to Son Doong, which is classified as the largest cave in the world.

The reportage, called “Let’s Fell the Grandness of Nature”, has been made by Japan ’s Kyodo film studio with assistance of Quang Binh province and the British Cave Research Association (BCRA).

Son Doong (Mountain River) Cave was announced as the largest in the world by BCRA, and selected as one of the most beautiful in the globe by the BBC news. The cave can contain a 40-storey building.

Son Doong cave was first spotted in Quang Binh’s Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park by a local man named Ho Khanh in 1991.

The cave was then made known publicly as lately as in 2009 by a group of British scientists from BCRA, led by Howard Limbert, after their surveying trip in Phong Nha-Ke Bang Park .

According to Limbert, the cave is five times larger than the nearby Phong Nha cave, previously considered to be the largest cave in Vietnam.

Son Doong cave is found to have a length of at least 6.5km. It is estimated to be 200m in width and 150m in height. The largest chamber of the cave is judged to be 250m in height.

Scientists have also discovered a great number of stalactites in astonishingly extraordinary shapes and also primitive forests in the cave.

A half-mile block of 40-story buildings could fit inside this lit stretch of Son Doong, which may be the world’s biggest subterranean passage.

Going underground, expedition members enter Hang En, a cave tunneled out by the Rao Thuong River. Dwindling to a series of ponds during the dry months, the river can rise almost 300 feet during the flood season, covering the rocks where cavers stand.

Headroom shrinks in the middle of Hang En as cavers pass beneath a ceiling scalloped by eons of floodwater rushing past. The river shortly reemerges onto the surface, then burrows into Son Doong after a few miles.

Like a petrified waterfall, a cascade of fluted limestone, greened by algae, stops awestruck cavers in their tracks. They’re near the exit of Hang En.

Son Doong’s airy chambers sprout life where light enters from above—a different world from the bare, cramped, pitch-black spaces familiar to most cavers. Ferns and other greenery colonize rimstone. In the jungles directly beneath
roof openings, explorers have seen monkeys, snakes, and birds.

Rare cave pearls fill dried-out terrace pools near the Garden of Edam in Son Doong. This unusually large collection of stone spheres formed drip by drip over the centuries as calcite crystals left behind by water layered themselves around grains of sand, enlarging over time.

The trickiest challenge for the expedition team was to find a way over the Great Wall of Vietnam, an overhanging mass of flowstone that blocked the way deep inside Son Doong.

“It sounded like a roaring train,” said an explorer, describing the noise a second before a waterfall exploded into Son Doong through the Watch Out for Dinosaurs doline, or sinkhole opening.

In the dry season, from November to April, a caver can safely explore Hang Ken, with its shallow pools. Come the monsoon, the underground river swells and floods the passages, making the cave impassable.

Taking the only way in, a climber descends 225 feet by rope into Loong Con. A survey party discovered the cave in 2010, hoping it would connect with the enormous Son Doong. A wall of boulders soon blocked the way, but a powerful draft indicated that a large cavern lay on the other side.

Italian architects help preserve Hanoi’s old quarter

The Italian embassy in Vietnam and the Genoa Architects Association held a conference in Hanoi on June 3 to introduce Genoa’s experience in preserving its old city after it was recognised by UNESCO as World Heritage site.

avataraspx 120110604085957 Italian architects help preserve Hanoi’s old quarter

The event, one of the activities to mark Italy Independence Day (June 2), said the Italian ambassador, Lorenzo Angeloni.

Architecture is one of the major issues of concern for the Italian embassy in Vietnam. The Genoa Architects Association and the Hanoi Architects Association have signed a cooperation agreement in the field.

Mirco Grassi, Head of the Genoa City Design Office said that Genoa has a population of 600,000 people living in an area of 30km2. The old city covering 3km2 was built in the 11th century with different lines of walls, narrow streets and some habours on the sea.

In the 13-14th centuries, the city was expanded to meet the demand for developing these habours.

Around 200 tall buildings were constructed in Genoa in 1900 to receive important guests to the city.

Today, 80 have been were selected for restoration and preservation and have also been recognised by UNESCO.

After restoration, some of the buildings will be inhabited and others have become cultural exhibition centres which attract a large number of tourists.

Giuliano Peirano, a representative from the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities, said that Italian architects are always ready to help Hanoi preserve its old quarter.

He proposed that the Vietnamese capital should decide which constructions in the old quarter need to be preserved. Hanoi should also focus on new technologies and solutions for preservation. The preservation work should be implemented gradually so it will not interfere with the lives of the people living there.
