An artisan of Sinh Village draws pictures on a wooden frame

A seminar was held to promote community based tourism services in central Thua Thien-Hue Province on December 7.

The event was aimed to review the two-year implementation of this type of tourism under the cooperation among farmers, the Responsible Tourism Group and SNV Netherlands Development Organisation.

To date, four community tourism sites have been set up in the province, attracting thousands of visitors, including tours to the ancient village of Phuoc Tich, the Thanh Toan tiled bridge, the Tam Giang Lagoon and the mountainous district of Nam Dong.

Tourists are given the opportunity to see special products made by local farmers, featuring Hue city’s identities such as a handmade-wooden models of Thanh Toan tiled bridge, folk paintings of Sinh Village and paper-made lotus flowers of Thanh Tien Village.

One such place is Ruong House, which is hundreds of years old (a type of panel home typical to Hue) in Phuoc Tich Village, eat cakes and rice with the house owners and then relax in fruit gardens.

If you wish to explore the traditional beauty of Cho House (houses less than 5 square metres set up by fishermen) on Tam Giang-Cau Hai, the widest lagoon in Southeast Asia, this is the place. Here, you can see tools and traditions of local fishermen and enjoy fresh seafood products.

The model of community tourism will help travel firms to bring more tourists to rural areas in Thua Thien-Hue and increase revenue for farmers as well as diversify tourism products in Thua Thien-Hue, according to Pham Thi Duyen Anh, SNV Tourism Advisor.

The following are photos of community tourism in Thua Thien-Hue and farmer’s unique tourism products.

Soc Trang: traditional boat race attracts visitors

Hundreds of thousands of people flocked to the southern province of Soc Trang to witness the annual ghe ngo (Khmer boat) race on November 21.

Sóc Trăng is a province in the Mekong Delta of southern Vietnam, with its capital in Sóc Trăng. The province occupies an area of 3,223 km², and has a population of approximately 1,213,400.

The province’s original Khmer name was Srok Kh’leang, meaning “silver depository” because it was where the Khmer king’s silver treasury was located. The Vietnamese settlers corrupted it into “Sốc-Kha-Lang” and eventually “Sóc Trăng”. Under the Nguyễn Dynasty emperor Minh Mạng, it was given the Sino-Vietnamese name Nguyệt Giang (月江), a calque of “Sông Trăng” (Moon River).

This is the traditional boat race that is held annually in Soc Trang during the Ooc Om Boc festival of the Khmer people in southern Vietnam.

The event attracted nearly 2000 rowers from southern provinces, who competed in four categories: men’s 1200m and 800m and women’s 1000m and 600m. The race took place in Maspero River.

If you visit the Southern Vietnam around this time, you should definitely choose a Mekong river cruise tour which includes Soc Trang to witness this amazing festival with your own eyes. It can be a real eye-opener experience.

Built in the early 19th century, the tower is situated on a rectangle-shaped piece of land that’s about 200 metres long and 125 metres wide. In the past, it consisted of three small towers, but there are only two left today.

According to art historians, Hoa Lai Tower is among the most ancient and beautiful historic monuments of the Cham people, an ethnic group in Southeast Asia. The people are concentrated between the Kampong Cham Province in Cambodia and central Vietnam’s Phan Rang-Thap Cham, Phan Thiet, Ho Chi Minh City and An Giang areas.

Experiencing ups and downs, the sophisticated design on PoKlong Garai Tower is still preserved with door bells and pillars. The tower is considered as the tourism symbol of the cactus region of Phan Rang.
