Snapshots At Mui Da Beach

The coastal township of Lagi in Binh Thuan Province is famous for breathtaking landscapes such as Duong Hill, Cam Binh and Nganh Tam Tan beaches, Ba Islet and Thay Thim Temple. But another place luring photographers is Mui Da Beach in Tan Phuoc Commune, where visitors can see the typical daily activities of fishing villages.

Fishermen sew nets on Mui Da Beach in lagi Township in Binh Thuan Province

In the early morning when it is still cool, dewdrops spatter on the leaves and the sun has not yet risen, photographers wake up and head to the beach in time to catch glimpses of fishermen returning to Mui Da Beach.

Strolling on the path leading to the wharf and listening to the pine trees singing in the breeze, tourists will feel at peace. The beach lies deep in the green pine forest, with an asphalt road heading toward the sandflat where some simple bamboo barriers mark the wharf.

Many colorfully-painted coracles are dried on the sandbanks, and the seawaves ripple there. The stillness overwhelms the immense sea in the evening, while animated atmosphere engulfs it in the morning. Even though it is quite early, locals get ready to serve food on the beach. They light fires to boil water and set up tables and chairs for guests.

The sea is still dark in the very early morning but the space is getting crowded. Some sit gazing at the sea, while others are busy taking the oxcarts close to the sandbank and feeding the oxen. Meanwhile, photographers look encumbered carrying their cameras, lenses and bags, anxious for that perfect shot.

Everything is ready on the beach to welcome the returning boats. The aroma of breakfast dishes fills the air. From the open sea, the light illuminates the sky and some boats are seen heading toward the beach. Giant boats with fishing nets, lifebuoys and catches of fish ride the waves to the shore. The beach is bustling and the oxcarts are waiting at the water’s edge.

Due to the shallow sea, big boats have to anchor far away and as such tourists cannot see them clearly from the beach. Locals use smaller motorized boats to transfer aqua-products and equipment ashore.

Upon reaching shallow water where the boats touch bottom, fishermen turn off the motors and drag them onto the sand. Oxcarts are responsible for pulling them ashore. Some fishermen bring the motors home for safekeeping, others take out fish from the nets and sort them.

As the sunrise shines its glory, more boats sail back and the oxcarts have to work non-stop, despite the short distance.

Since fishermen were working throughout the previous night, they have to wear raincoats in a bid to resist the cold. In the daytime, however, it’s scorching. They return in the morning exhausted.

Along Vietnam’s coastline, there are many such fishing ports but while some are popular, others have their own potential. Lagi Township has a large fishing port with modern fishery service infrustracture, but the very nestled fishing villages with scenes like these are typical in every region.

For instance, tourists are intrigued to see the way locals use oxcarts to drag the boats ashore, or fishermen shaking fishing nets on the sandflat. From 9 a.m., when the morning catches are finished, cart owners leisurely sit smoking on the sand while the oxen freely graze by the immense sea.

Fish harvest prayer follows original rituals

A crowd of almost 700 fishermen in traditional costumes praying for a good fishing harvest on June 14 aroused the curiosity of visitors to a sea festival in Nha Trang Coastal Park, Khanh Hoa province.

The event originated when a dead whale drifted onshore near a coastal village. The prayer used to taking place at the temple built for the giant fish in an expectation that it would bring a bountiful fish harvest.

The event strictly followed the original rituals, which began with a two-phase procession to welcome the whale, which locals respectfully call “His High Excellency”. The first phase was a worshipping ceremony at sea and the second was a procession to bring the soul of “His High Excellency” to the temple dedicated to him.

The rituals culminated in a chanting festival where folk chants vividly painted a picture of an occupation full of risks and dangers for fishermen.

The event was part of the ongoing Nha Trang Sea Destination festival 2011, which was colourful with numerous festivities such as a bicycle taxi parade, kite flying and a dancing festival.

Creation of bamboo boats is a silent pleasure

Most visitors go to Phan Thiet City’s Thuy Tu Temple to witness the hundreds of whale skeletons but they forget there is also a lot of life in the nearby bamboo boat making craft village, the silent corner of sea life.

A worker in the bamboo boat making craft village in Phan Thiet City

Thuyen thung (bamboo boat) has been used by fishermen in the Quang region for over a century in central Vietnam. Due to the high demand of fishermen, the craft of making bamboo boats also developed, but these days just a few households preserve the craft.

Other crafts are seen as basic but making a bamboo boat is no plain sailing. Firstly, artisans have to cut bamboo trees in the forest them soak them in water for a day. The next important step is to slice them into regular, light and straight strings. This step influences the quality of the boats which are soft, leathery and solid. Bamboo strings also need to be dried for one day.

The artisans then weave them into round planks and finish the boat with a stable hoop also made by bamboo. The boat needs to be covered by a form of glue made of rai (a kind of tree) oil and cow droppings.

A craftsman with 50 years of experience of making bamboo boats, Do Van Luong, said: “To have a good boat, you have to find a good bamboo tree that is not too old or too young; it needs to be straight and should not have many sections. The job requires you to be patient, meticulous and of course talented.”

Also keeping the tradition alive with Luong’s family is Ngo Phuoc.

Phuoc said: “The boat is not only for fishermen plying their trade but also a very important part of the traditional boat race festivals, and of course for tourists to experience. So we have to preserve the tradition.”

Luong and Phuoc and their families also have to hire workers to help meet the demands of local fishermen.

Rare gem Tien Thanh like Mui Ne of old

Bamboo basket boats near Tien Thanh beach in the early morning as it is seen from Sand Hills Beach Resort & Spa

The tranquil beach of Tien Thanh is sometimes called the second Mui Ne in Binh Thuan Province by locals and tourists alike.

Tien Thanh, though, is more of a well-kept secret and in the new resort, tourists can enjoy the sea breeze, sunshine and relaxation without mingling with the growing crowds of Mui Ne, 15 kilometers down the road.

Tien Thanh is like  Mui Ne a decade ago when the popular destination was serene but now it is a tourist hotspot with so many resorts, shops and service facilities to cater for the influx of both local and international visitors and is now dubbed “Kingdom of Resorts.” Of course, this change is not appreciated by some tourists who want to escape to a weekend hideaway after a long week at the office or long-haul flights.

The Tien Thanh beach area does exactly that and presents a haven of serenity away from the hustle and bustle of Mui Ne and Phan Thiet City for short or long haul breaks. In Tien Thanh you are awoken from a deep sleep not by early morning crowds of visitors but the sound of gentle waves clapping against the shore.

Guests can view the sun rise from the east before strolling on the beach to look for shells when the tide recedes away, and they can watch locals catching fish, shrimp and snails near the shore. Many tourists take snapshots of bamboo basket boats swaying on the waves as fishermen try to net young lobsters for sale to shrimp farms near and far from Binh Thuan Province.

This little hidden gem is rare enough that there are not many resorts along the Tien Thanh beach area. One of them is Sand Hills Beach Resort & Spa which is situated around five kilometres from the heart of Phan Thiet City. This property owns 200 meters of private white-sand beach with 18 bungalow and villas in service on three hectares of evergreen plants and flowers.

The resort was designed to reflect an ancient Vietnamese garden residence, and to offer guests comfort, convenience and privacy.

The Tien Thanh beach area is easily accessible by taxi or honda om (motorbike taxi) that guests can take in the center of Phan Thiet or at the Suoi Cat Tourist Area.

Vietnam’s Tourism Development To Focus On Islands

In 2011, the national plan to develop Vietnam’s tourism industry will highlight island and sea attractions.

There will be 30 events organised in the south-central region of the country, including the International Boat Racing Festival in Binh Thuan; mountain climb race contest in Phu Yen; the 1st International Choir Festival & Competition in Hoi An Town; Goddess of Mercy Festival in Danang City and Sea and Islands Festival in Quang Ngai.

Phu Yen Province will set off an event to mark the 400th anniversary of its founding.

Also, this year will see the 17th Vietnam Film Festival. This event will include a conference on the scientific and cultural heritage of the south central region.

This is a good time for the south-central coastal region, not only to promote their viability as a tourist destination, but to highlight their maritime economy.

Le Kim Anh, the Vice Chairman of the Phu Yen People’s Committee, said the locality is preparing infrastructure to welcome tourists. He also disclosed that, so far this year, the number of foreign visitors to the province has increased by 20% from last year.

This year, Vietnam has set a goal of attracting 5.3 international visitors.

The commencement ceremony for the new year in tourism will be held on April 1.

Rest and relaxation in Vung Tau

I went to Vung Tau last week to unwind. The popular weekend getaway may not be famous like Nha Trang or Mui Ne with their stunning beaches, islands, islets and sand dunes. But Vung Tau has its own charms and is an amazing escape at weekends for Saigonese who haven’t got the time to go farther.

vung tau 2 Rest and relaxation in Vung Tau

It took me about three hours on motorbike. When I arrived the red sun was setting so I rode straight to the ocean and sat there until the aches and stresses of my long journey melted away.

I took room by the sea at a small Vung Tau hotel, then went down to the beach where couples were walking hand in hand. Some stalls were selling delicious fresh seafood. The wind blew in my face, a sea breeze for a city soul. The lights of boats in the distance were like stars on the water making the scene romantic and mysterious.

In the sand I saw words written, ‘I love you,’ ‘I miss you’ together with their names in hearts. I felt life was so beautiful and happiness was simple.

vung tau 300x200 Rest and relaxation in Vung Tau

Early the next day, I woke up to go to the lighthouse to enjoy the dawn and admire the sun rising over the ocean. The view included Lon and Nho mountains and a bird’s eye look at the town.

Some local women were on their way to the market and some men were swimming while most tourists still slept. The day began in that way, simple and carefree.

After taking breakfast, I went to the Jesus monument where many Catholic pilgrims go everyday to pray.

As the sun warmed, I went back to the beach to swim. It was busy and disappointing as none of the girls were wearing bikinis, preferring instead to swim in their shorts and T shirts. Some of them wore long-sleeves and masks to protect them from the sun.

A lot of people sat at tables under umbrellas enjoying the seafood that the vendors cooked for them.

After a while I got tired of playing with the waves as the water is not very clean. So I said goodbye to Vung Tau feeling revitalized enough to return to the congestion of Ho Chi Minh city.

Cat Ba Island

Source: Vietnam Beaches

Cat Ba island, the World’s Biosphere Reserve, Vietnam’s Pearl Island, a surprising heavenly landscape!

Belonging to Cat Ba Archipelago, which includes 367 islands, in the south of Ha Long bay, Cat Ba Island is only 30 km from Hai Phong city centre and 25 km from Ha Long city. Not at all is it a random thing when Cat Ba is also called Pearl Island (Dao Ngoc in Vietnamese). With a 70m altitude, and the post to overlook Lan Ha lagoon, Cat Ba lures tourists by its heavenly captivation. With an area of 140 km2 and population of 9000 people, it is proud to be the biggest island among the 1,969 islands in Ha Long bay. If you are considering a fresh-air and beautiful place to travel, just pack your stuff, stand up and fly to this magic land of blue Sky and Sea!

The Biosphere reserve of the world!

cat ba beach Cat Ba Island

The archipelago has a global significance thanks to its plentiful species found nowhere else. It is home to the golden-headed langur (Trachypithecus poliocephalus), one of the top ten rare primates in the world due.
Besides, visitors can find several precious habitat types here, including fringing coral reefs, mangrove forest, sea grass beds, willow swamp forest and tropical limestone forest. Many of those are fiercely endangered.
With a major coastal fishing zone, and a karst seascape of outstanding beauty, a tremendous potential for agri-aqua culture and tourism is open to the area. Thanks to the special values, Cat Ba was acknowledged as the World Biosphere Reserve in 2004. So, are you curious to go? Then…

… Take a visit to its caves and grottos, now?

Cat Ba boasts many beautiful caves and grottos such as Trung Trang, Quan Y and Thien Long…

Trung Trang is the largest valley in Cat Ba Island with the total area of 300 ha, from 10-30 meter lower than the sea level, which is 15km northwest of the island. It is about 300 m walk. Beautiful with glistening stalactite & stalagmite it is! Visiting Trung Trang, one has learnt that it is deeply a thousand-year great work of Nature!

Quan Y grotto. “Quan Y” means “Army medical care”. This special name derives from the Wartime against American Air force, when Vietnamese people built a hospital with hundreds of beds inside this grotto. Today, visitors can easily reach it as Quan Y Grotto is on the main way along the Island, only about 13 km from the Island’s centre.

About 2 hours traveling by boat from Phu Long wharf is Thien Long grotto. It has just been discovered since 1997. This is one of the most beautiful caves and grottos in Ha Long bay. As wide and deep with miraculously various shaped & colorful stalactites and stalagmites, and tree roots from the mount to the bottom, Thien Long grotto is admired by any tourist stepping inside. One even said: “It looks like a pretty and peaceful fairy land on the sea..!” after her tour here. Also, people can feel free to contemplate the coral system, salty lakes and ponds in and around, which are definitely rich of marine bio-diversity.

Go swimming & entertain yourself, or you might regret!

A peak mountain in the shape of a turtle divides the beach into 2 small beaches, Cat Co One and Cat Co Two. On the right hand is fabricated rock mountain, while on the left hand is the clear and blue sea water, white and smooth sand. The beauty of the beach has been changing side by side with the flying time. Yet, never would it lose the natural luring power.
In the morning, after enjoying the sunrise on the sea, tourists will visit Monkey Island, conquering Hai Thanh mount, Hon Thot mount or Hon Guoc mount, and swimming in the pure sea as much as you can to feel how fresh a “heaven” can be!
In the afternoon, you may discover the area’s original beauty by renting a kayak to paddle to the bay. Then, should you are still well enough, perhaps we join some sports on the beach, such as valley ball, boat racing, and so forth. When night falls, the whole team would lie down in the cottages near by the beach to relax for a while, listening to the sound of rough sea waves. A romantic & relaxation experience!

Lan Ha Bay

Lan Ha bay is situated in the southeast of Cat Ba Island. It takes about 30 minutes to go there from Cat Ba by boat. The bay is large with arched shore. Getting inside, a number of islands and beaches are welcoming tourists.
Not only is it famous for beautiful beaches, but also for the imposing caves and ideal place for fishing. A lot of visitors who are fond of fishing do not want to come back once staying here for a while!

Viet Hai village

To switch into a new atmospheric space, tourists should now get to Viet Hai Village. It captures attentions by the precious retained hundreds-year traditional cultural values of Cat Ba. Viet Hai people still live in the simple house, built in bamboo, wood, leaves and soil.

If it gets late, we may stay overnight in the village in a simple and guest house at very reasonable price. You might be surprised as being treated in a friendly way, and served with special local cuisine seafood by the honest and hospitable local people. Believe me, you may not want to go back soon!

How to reach Cat Ba Island?

Visitors can reach Cat Ba Island by two ways. One, by ferry from Hai Phong city, Binh ferry station or Dinh Vu ferry station. And two, from Ha Long bay. After visiting this Natural World Heritage Site, visitors can keep staying on boat and getting to the Island.
