Snapshots At Mui Da Beach

The coastal township of Lagi in Binh Thuan Province is famous for breathtaking landscapes such as Duong Hill, Cam Binh and Nganh Tam Tan beaches, Ba Islet and Thay Thim Temple. But another place luring photographers is Mui Da Beach in Tan Phuoc Commune, where visitors can see the typical daily activities of fishing villages.

Fishermen sew nets on Mui Da Beach in lagi Township in Binh Thuan Province

In the early morning when it is still cool, dewdrops spatter on the leaves and the sun has not yet risen, photographers wake up and head to the beach in time to catch glimpses of fishermen returning to Mui Da Beach.

Strolling on the path leading to the wharf and listening to the pine trees singing in the breeze, tourists will feel at peace. The beach lies deep in the green pine forest, with an asphalt road heading toward the sandflat where some simple bamboo barriers mark the wharf.

Many colorfully-painted coracles are dried on the sandbanks, and the seawaves ripple there. The stillness overwhelms the immense sea in the evening, while animated atmosphere engulfs it in the morning. Even though it is quite early, locals get ready to serve food on the beach. They light fires to boil water and set up tables and chairs for guests.

The sea is still dark in the very early morning but the space is getting crowded. Some sit gazing at the sea, while others are busy taking the oxcarts close to the sandbank and feeding the oxen. Meanwhile, photographers look encumbered carrying their cameras, lenses and bags, anxious for that perfect shot.

Everything is ready on the beach to welcome the returning boats. The aroma of breakfast dishes fills the air. From the open sea, the light illuminates the sky and some boats are seen heading toward the beach. Giant boats with fishing nets, lifebuoys and catches of fish ride the waves to the shore. The beach is bustling and the oxcarts are waiting at the water’s edge.

Due to the shallow sea, big boats have to anchor far away and as such tourists cannot see them clearly from the beach. Locals use smaller motorized boats to transfer aqua-products and equipment ashore.

Upon reaching shallow water where the boats touch bottom, fishermen turn off the motors and drag them onto the sand. Oxcarts are responsible for pulling them ashore. Some fishermen bring the motors home for safekeeping, others take out fish from the nets and sort them.

As the sunrise shines its glory, more boats sail back and the oxcarts have to work non-stop, despite the short distance.

Since fishermen were working throughout the previous night, they have to wear raincoats in a bid to resist the cold. In the daytime, however, it’s scorching. They return in the morning exhausted.

Along Vietnam’s coastline, there are many such fishing ports but while some are popular, others have their own potential. Lagi Township has a large fishing port with modern fishery service infrustracture, but the very nestled fishing villages with scenes like these are typical in every region.

For instance, tourists are intrigued to see the way locals use oxcarts to drag the boats ashore, or fishermen shaking fishing nets on the sandflat. From 9 a.m., when the morning catches are finished, cart owners leisurely sit smoking on the sand while the oxen freely graze by the immense sea.

Creation of bamboo boats is a silent pleasure

Most visitors go to Phan Thiet City’s Thuy Tu Temple to witness the hundreds of whale skeletons but they forget there is also a lot of life in the nearby bamboo boat making craft village, the silent corner of sea life.

Thuyen thung (bamboo boat) has been used by fishermen in the Quang region for over a century in central Vietnam. Due to the high demand of fishermen, the craft of making bamboo boats also developed, but these days just a few households preserve the craft.

Other crafts are seen as basic but making a bamboo boat is no plain sailing. Firstly, artisans have to cut bamboo trees in the forest them soak them in water for a day. The next important step is to slice them into regular, light and straight strings. This step influences the quality of the boats which are soft, leathery and solid. Bamboo strings also need to be dried for one day.

The artisans then weave them into round planks and finish the boat with a stable hoop also made by bamboo. The boat needs to be covered by a form of glue made of rai (a kind of tree) oil and cow droppings.

A craftsman with 50 years of experience of making bamboo boats, Do Van Luong, said: “To have a good boat, you have to find a good bamboo tree that is not too old or too young; it needs to be straight and should not have many sections. The job requires you to be patient, meticulous and of course talented.”

Also keeping the tradition alive with Luong’s family is Ngo Phuoc.

Phuoc said: “The boat is not only for fishermen plying their trade but also a very important part of the traditional boat race festivals, and of course for tourists to experience. So we have to preserve the tradition.”

Luong and Phuoc and their families also have to hire workers to help meet the demands of local fishermen.

Swallow bird island in Phu Quoc

Nhan Island (Swallow bird island) in Phu Quoc District in the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang resembles a ship carrying white stones sailing on the blue waters of the sea with swallows flying above.

A swallow sitting beside her eggs

Visitors leave the wharf in Ham Ninh Commune to travel for over 14 hours to reach Tho Chau Commune. There they transfer on to a motorboat to continue on to Nhan Island for a 10-minute ride.

Hundreds of swallows hover all over the island, which are often seen dipping into the sea to catch anchovy. There are no trees on the island but only stones piled up to create shallow caves which are place for their habitat, nesting and breeding from lunar June to October annually.

A swallow lays only one or two eggs on the stones or in the small caves. It does not hatch eggs like other species of birds do but keeps a close watch on its eggs for a month until the chicks hatch. Then the swallow flies out frequently to look for food to feed her young.

During the breeding season, visitors have to be very careful not to step onto swallow eggs, which are the same color as the stones.

When the breeding season is over, from lunar November to March, the swallows migrate from the island only to return during the next breeding season.

Visiting Nhan Island is also an opportunity for tourists to bathe in the pure blue waters, or deep-sea dive and collect colorful and uniquely shaped corals. They can also sit around the white stones or go fishing for cuttlefish in a serene atmosphere filled with the chirping of swallows.

Legendary Yang Bay Waterfall

On the occasion of the Nation Reunification Day (April 30) and May Day (May 1), a large number of tourists flocked to Yang Bay waterfall in Khanh Hoa.

Yang Bay 45km from Nha Trang

Yang Bay, also known as Thac Troi or the Waterfall of the Gods, is located in the middle of a forest surrounded by high mountains.

The waterfall, about 45 kilometres from Nha Trang, is not only beautiful, but has a legend that goes along with it.

The story goes that on the top of 900-metre high Gia Kang Mountain, a great many very smooth stones were laid down, creating a playground for the gods and fairies.

Among the fairies, the youngest often disguised herself as a countryside girl. She was then adopted by a village couple.

After some time, she fell in love with a local man named Cau Son. When informed about their love, the gods became angry and turned Cau Son into a rock. This did not discourage the fairy, however, who decided to stay and guard the statue of her beloved.

So the gods took out their anger on the people of the village by drying up their water. Blazing heat along with dried up rivers and streams was making the place uninhabitable.

Then two frogs appeared, a mother and her baby frog. Searching for water and scorched, the mother frog jumped around until she was overcome by the heat. The baby frog cried over his mother until his last breath.

The gods were so moved that they cried. Their tears created two waterfalls, one large one and one smaller, in the places where the two frogs died.

When the water touched the the statue of Cau Son, he was brought back to life and reunited with the fairy.

To commemorate the great services of the frogs, people decided to named the great waterfall as Yang Bay or Waterfall of the Gods, and the smaller one as Yang Khang or the Child of the Gods, and a third as Ho Cho or the Mother Waterfall.

Among the 45 islands, only 10 are inhabited with just a few thousand people on each. They are named according to their shapes and island folklore such as Hon Heo (Pig Islet), Hon De (Goat Islet) or Hon Ong Nhom (Mr.Nhum Islet), Hon Dua (Coconut Islet).

According to local stories during the French colonization, Ba Lua was the name of a very beautiful Chinese -Vietnamese woman living in Ha Tien Town. As her Western husband was extremely powerful, she was made owner of all islands; hence the name Ba Lua.

Seafood and birdlife is plentiful and the islands are known for their many herbal remedy trees. Hon Ong Nhum has many kinds of snakes.

To get to Ba Lua, take a boat from Hang Pagoda- Phu Tu Island in Binh An Commune, Kien Luong District.

There are no tourism services there, so come prepared to camp with hammocks, tents, flashlight, lighters, knife, water and food. Tourists also can ask boat owners to prepare food for them.

On the islands, it’s easy to catch snails, oysters, crabs and clams on the rocky reefs for your own private grilled seafood party. The colorful dawns and sunsets are unforgettably romantic.

Vietnam’s Tourism Development To Focus On Islands

In 2011, the national plan to develop Vietnam’s tourism industry will highlight island and sea attractions.

There will be 30 events organised in the south-central region of the country, including the International Boat Racing Festival in Binh Thuan; mountain climb race contest in Phu Yen; the 1st International Choir Festival & Competition in Hoi An Town; Goddess of Mercy Festival in Danang City and Sea and Islands Festival in Quang Ngai.

Phu Yen Province will set off an event to mark the 400th anniversary of its founding.

Also, this year will see the 17th Vietnam Film Festival. This event will include a conference on the scientific and cultural heritage of the south central region.

This is a good time for the south-central coastal region, not only to promote their viability as a tourist destination, but to highlight their maritime economy.

Le Kim Anh, the Vice Chairman of the Phu Yen People’s Committee, said the locality is preparing infrastructure to welcome tourists. He also disclosed that, so far this year, the number of foreign visitors to the province has increased by 20% from last year.

This year, Vietnam has set a goal of attracting 5.3 international visitors.

The commencement ceremony for the new year in tourism will be held on April 1.

HCM City misses out on large cruise ships as port proves unsuitable

Tour operators serving cruise ships have reported a sharp increase in the arrival of cruise tourists but say the lack of ports to accommodate such vessels is hindering the development of this segment.

Phan Xuan Anh, chairman of Viet Excursions, said in the first quarter his company served many cruise ships including the QE II, Queen Mary II, Arcadia, and Artemis, with each carrying 1,500 to 2,000 passengers.

But large vessels like the Queen Mary II cannot dock at Sai Gon Port because of the low clearance of Phu My Bridge and have to dock in Ba Ria-Vung Tau instead, he said.

Doan Thi Thanh Tra, marketing manager of Saigontrourist Travel Service Co, said the company had expected to serve nearly 20,000 cruise tourists in the first quarter, but some large ships decided to go to Da Nang instead because they cannot drop anchor in HCM City.
