Among the 45 islands, only 10 are inhabited with just a few thousand people on each. They are named according to their shapes and island folklore such as Hon Heo (Pig Islet), Hon De (Goat Islet) or Hon Ong Nhom (Mr.Nhum Islet), Hon Dua (Coconut Islet).

According to local stories during the French colonization, Ba Lua was the name of a very beautiful Chinese -Vietnamese woman living in Ha Tien Town. As her Western husband was extremely powerful, she was made owner of all islands; hence the name Ba Lua.

Seafood and birdlife is plentiful and the islands are known for their many herbal remedy trees. Hon Ong Nhum has many kinds of snakes.

To get to Ba Lua, take a boat from Hang Pagoda- Phu Tu Island in Binh An Commune, Kien Luong District.

There are no tourism services there, so come prepared to camp with hammocks, tents, flashlight, lighters, knife, water and food. Tourists also can ask boat owners to prepare food for them.

On the islands, it’s easy to catch snails, oysters, crabs and clams on the rocky reefs for your own private grilled seafood party. The colorful dawns and sunsets are unforgettably romantic.

Travel To Vietnam: Complex of Hue Monuments

Location

Complex of Hue Monuments lies along the Perfume River in Hue City and some adjacent areas of Thua Thien Hue Province. Hue City constitutes the cultural, political and economic centre of the province, and was the old imperial city of Vietnam under the Nguyen Dynasty from 1802 to 1945.

History

Since 1306, after the wedding of the princess Huyen Tran of the Tran Dynasty with Che Man, the Cham King, the territories of Chau O and Chau Ly (comprised of Quang Tri, Thua Thien – Hue and part of Northern Quang Nam today) took the name of Thuan Hoa. In the second half of the 15th century, under the reign of King Le Thanh Tong, the name of “Hue” appeared for the first time. In 1636, the residence of the Nguyen Lords was settled at Kim Long (Hue). In 1687, it was transferred to Phu Xuan – where is the Citadel today. Early in the 18th century, Phu Xuan became the political, economic and cultural centre of the southern part of Vietnam. Then, from 1788 to 1801, it became the capital of the Tay Son Dynasty.

hue dienthaihoa Travel To Vietnam: Complex of Hue Monuments

From 1802 to 1945, Hue was the capital of unified Vietnam under the reign of the 13 Nguyen Kings. During these years, architectural works of a high cultural and historic value were built: the Citadel, especially the Imperial City (including 253 constructions), 7 Royal tomb compound of 9 kings of the Nguyen Dynasty, the Esplanade of Nam Giao, the Ho Quyen arena and the Hon Chen Temple.

Cultural values

Located in the centre of Hue, along the Perfume (Huong) River’s northern bank, the complex of royal architecture represents and demonstrates the power of the Nguyen Dynasty’s centralism. Contained in this complex are Kinh Thanh Hue (the Hue Capital Citadel), Hoang Thanh (the Royal Citadel or Imperial City) and Tu Cam Thanh (the Forbidden Citadel) clustered together, symmetrically placed along the longitudinal axis and facing to the south.

The system of walls combines sophisticatedly both eastern and western architectural styles placed in natural harmony with Ngu Binh Mount, Perfume River, Gia Vien and Boc Thanh islets. Even people implicitly consider these natural landscapes as a part of the complex.

Surrounded by a square wall, almost 600 metres in length on each side, the Imperial City has four gates, of which the south gate (Ngo Mon) is most typical in construction and is widely seen and recognized as the symbol of Hue Citadel. It served not only as the main entrance but was also the place where important events of the dynasty took place. Within the area of the Imperial City, the Forbidden Citadel was the area reserved for daily activities of the royal family.

The main north-south axis, called Than dao (miraculous road), runs through the three walls of the Hue Capital Citadel, Imperial City and Forbidden Citadel and was marked with the important constructions of Hue Citadel. Hundred of small and large buildings were built symmetrically along this axis in harmony with their natural surroundings gives one a feeling of gentle and serenity.  These buildings include Nghinh Luong Pavilion (Pavilion for Fresh Air), Phu Van Lau (or the Pavilion of Edicts was the building where Emperor’s edicts and lists of successful candidates of Thi Hoi (National Examination) and Thi Dinh (Court Examinations) were publicised), Ky Dai (Flag Tower), Ngo Mon Gate (the main entrance), Thai Hoa Palace (The Throne Palace, or Palace of the Supreme Harmony, was the building for great court’s meetings), Can Chanh Palace (the place for every day working of Emperors), Can Thanh Palace (Emperor’s Private Palace), Khon Thai Residence (Queen’s Private Apartment), Kien Trung Pavilion (the place for daily activities of Emperors)…

In the distance, to the west of the Capital Citadel, along the Perfume River, are the famous royal tombs and temples, masterpieces in landscape architecture built by the Nguyen Dynasty. Each royal tomb aimed at creating a living place for royal pleasure before becoming an eternal resting place after the king’s death. This resulted in the architecture of royal tombs in Hue being distinguished by unique characteristics.

Each tomb reflects its owner’s life and character: the magnificence of Gia Long’s tomb in the immense landscape of mountains and jungles represents the spirit of a general in war; the symmetry and majesty of Minh Mang’s tomb combiners both man-made and natural mountains and lakes and reveals the powerful will and solemn nature of a talented politician who was also an orderly poet; the peaceful and sombre qualities of Thieu Tri’s tomb reflects the innermost feelings of an outstanding poet who made few achievements in political life; the romance and poetic atmosphere of Tu Duc’s tomb  evoke the elegant and subtle tendency of a poet rather than the strong characteristic of a politician.

In addition, place-names that embellish for the beauty of the Complex of Hue Monuments can be named as: Huong River, Ngu Binh Mountain, Thien Mu Pagoda, Bach Ma Mountain, the Thuan An and Lang Co Beaches…

At the meeting of the 17th session of the World Heritage Committee (WHC) in Columbia, from the 6th to the 11th of December 1993, UNESCO has come to the decision of recognising the architectural ensemble of Hue as a world cultural heritage. This was a noteworthy event in the cultural history. For the reason that Hue is the first site in Vietnam ever listed in the World Heritage list.

As to the cultural value, a World Cultural Heritage Site, like the Complex of Hue Monuments, has to:

- Be representative of an original artistic achievement, a masterpiece created by Man’s hands;

- Have a great value for its building technique or its architecture in a general development plan for a city or in a program for the embellishment of the sight of a world cultural zone;

- Be representative of an architectural ensemble of an important historical period; Be closely related to important events, to ideas or beliefs having a great influence or to famous historical personalities.

In the closing report of the above-mentioned meeting, the WHC has briefly assessed the value of Hue as follows:

“The architecture of Hue, which has been the Capital of a unified Vietnam, built at about the beginning of the 19th century, combines the oriental philosophy with the traditions of Vietnam. Intimately mingled with the natural environment, the beauty and special richness of the architecture and decorative art of the building are an original image of the Vietnamese monarchy at its most prosperous period”.

A Spice world Among Hanoi

Famous Restaurant in Hanoi

La Verticale in Hanoi is more than a classy restaurant in the capable hands of Didier Corlou, a five-star Diamond Award chef and member of the French Culinary Academy. It is also the place to find exotic spices from Vietnam and other countries.

Corlou – who has served his fare to several visiting heads of state including Jacques Chirac, Bill Clinton and George Bush – has been working as a chef in Vietnam for 20 years, starting with the French and Vietnamese restaurants at the Sofitel Metropole.

During this time he has traveled all over the country in search of exotic ingredients, spices and traditional cooking methods to create his unique menu.

The best Vietnamese food is made in Vietnam as the land provides special spices and herbs that no traditional dish can go without. For example, anyone wanting to learn how to cook pho must first learn how to use ginger and star flower.

These spices and herbs from all over can be found in the shop adjacent to La Verticale. It’s located on the ground floor of a French villa and is warm and inviting with its hundreds of large and small glass jars of exotic spices.

Corlou says he investigated how nuoc mam (fish sauce) differed from place to place in Vietnam, particularly Cat Hai (Hai Phong), Phu Quoc (Kien Giang Province), Nha Trang (Khanh Hoa Province) and other established sauce-producing areas on the coast.

On his journeys around Sa Pa in the northwestern mountains, he came across the spices that the local tribes use to keep their meat and other food for months.

Much of what he discovered for himself as he traveled around can be found in his shop at 19 Ngo Van So Street.

“At this shop I can find different kinds of pepper ranging from wild pepper to Phu Quoc Island pepper. Pollen from the forest and 15-year-old fish sauce are my favorites for spicing up my cooking,” says Nguyen Van, one of the customers in the shop.

“I like the wild honey and five-spice Tonkin honey for their special natural flavors. Fresh star anise and fresh coriander seeds in salt water (also called Caviar from the Gardens) add a special flavor to simple dishes,” says Le Huong, another customer.

“Vietnamese minorities have been cooking and treating diseases with spices for a very long time, such as with talauma or pepper from the mountain tops. The most commonly used spices are black cardamom and star anise, which only grow naturally on the cloudy plateaux of the north,” says Corlou.

His shop is a spice encyclopedia where the spices are sorted into two groups. The first comprises rare spices from the mountains and other remote regions inhabited by ethnic minorities. The second features spices in daily use in Vietnam like star anise, turmeric, ginger and cinnamon.

The shop also stocks cookbooks by Corlou and traditional Vietnamese cooking equipment including the dua ca (long bamboo sticks), stone pestle and mortar, and special dishes and bowls designed by the famous chef.

Vietnam’s Tourism Development To Focus On Islands

In 2011, the national plan to develop Vietnam’s tourism industry will highlight island and sea attractions.

There will be 30 events organised in the south-central region of the country, including the International Boat Racing Festival in Binh Thuan; mountain climb race contest in Phu Yen; the 1st International Choir Festival & Competition in Hoi An Town; Goddess of Mercy Festival in Danang City and Sea and Islands Festival in Quang Ngai.

Phu Yen Province will set off an event to mark the 400th anniversary of its founding.

Also, this year will see the 17th Vietnam Film Festival. This event will include a conference on the scientific and cultural heritage of the south central region.

This is a good time for the south-central coastal region, not only to promote their viability as a tourist destination, but to highlight their maritime economy.

Le Kim Anh, the Vice Chairman of the Phu Yen People’s Committee, said the locality is preparing infrastructure to welcome tourists. He also disclosed that, so far this year, the number of foreign visitors to the province has increased by 20% from last year.

This year, Vietnam has set a goal of attracting 5.3 international visitors.

The commencement ceremony for the new year in tourism will be held on April 1.

HCM City misses out on large cruise ships as port proves unsuitable

Tour operators serving cruise ships have reported a sharp increase in the arrival of cruise tourists but say the lack of ports to accommodate such vessels is hindering the development of this segment.

Phan Xuan Anh, chairman of Viet Excursions, said in the first quarter his company served many cruise ships including the QE II, Queen Mary II, Arcadia, and Artemis, with each carrying 1,500 to 2,000 passengers.

But large vessels like the Queen Mary II cannot dock at Sai Gon Port because of the low clearance of Phu My Bridge and have to dock in Ba Ria-Vung Tau instead, he said.

Doan Thi Thanh Tra, marketing manager of Saigontrourist Travel Service Co, said the company had expected to serve nearly 20,000 cruise tourists in the first quarter, but some large ships decided to go to Da Nang instead because they cannot drop anchor in HCM City.

A different side to Can Gio

Mention Can Gio, the most remote district of HCMC, and people think of mangrove forests, mudflats and coconut trees. However, there is a different Can Gio, with friendly locals, shady roads and quaint villages on a small peninsula that awaits discovery.

From Ho Chi Minh City, travelers can take a motorbike on Nguyen Tat Thanh Street in District 4, then turn to Huynh Tat Phat Street in District 7, cross Binh Khanh Ferry then head for 40 kilometers along Rung Sac road.

The recently sealed Run Sac road used to be a nightmare of mud and puddles,

but now it’s a smooth highway through forests full of birds and monkeys.

A stop at a guesthouse at Can Thanh Town will give you insight into the lives of local fishermen. There are no luxury hotels but it’s very peaceful and clean.

In the afternoon, walk to the wharf to watch the small fishing boats putter home from sea with fish, crab and shrimps.

Then stop by Can Gio Market by the sea to visit the local fishmongers.

The small restaurants on Duyen Hai Street are not to be missed with seafood straight off the boats for VND15,000 to 120,000 a dish.

The battle for Cu Chi barbeque

Saigon’s famed picnic destination has been through a lot, but it’s still the best place for barbecued beef.

Bo to Cu Chi 073 11w The battle for Cu Chi barbeque

Grilled Cu Chi beef is among the delicacies of Ho Chi Minh City

Cu Chi was once known as the ideal picnic spot for Ho Chi Minh City office workers. Rich fruit orchards and fecund farms offered a wonderful gastronomical day trip for stressed out city folk.

During the war, the people of Cu Chi were harried by one of the most vicious campaigns of the entire war.

The Americans never could beat the tunnel-dwelling freedom fighters. But they did ruin Cu Chi as a dining destination, for a time.

Today, it’s back.

Families looking to survive after the victory invested in cattle and it has paid off, big time.

Now Cu Chi is the city’s prime source for cheap and tasty veal and beef.

Barbeque joints, catering to HCMC tourists now dot the district. Places like Bo To (young beef) Xuan Dao Restaurant serve the following local delicacies:

Boiled beef

Though it may sound bland, boiled beef makes for an ideal appetizer at the Xuan Dao. This isn’t your English grandmother’s boiled meat. This one is cooked in pure flavor.

Consider a trip to the following restaurants:

Bo To Xuan Dao
Nguyen Giao Street, Highway 22, Cu Chi Town, Cu Chi District

Bo To Cu Chi
38B Dinh Tien Hoang Street, District 1

Bay Quyt
9B Le Quy Don Street, Phu Nhuan District

Makers of the dish start by creating a base broth flavored with boiled bones, black cardamom, ginger and onion.

The bubbling liquid is served with tender beef slices and diners are invited to boil them to perfection.

The meat is then rolled with fresh herbs and rice paper and dipped into a special sauce.

Fried beef skin with fresh turmeric

In Vietnam, beef skin fried with fresh turmeric is often prescribed for those suffering from a weak stomach. Whether or not this prescription works for you, the appetizer makes for a delicious accompaniment to a cold beer.

Thinly sliced beef is fried up with battered bits of turmeric, onion, celery, roasted peanut and chili.

The crisp meat slices are wrapped up in vermicelli, cucumber, bean sprouts and herbs and dunked into a flavored fish sauce. Voila!

Grilled beef

One of the joys of dining at a place like Bo To Xuan Dao is the pleasure of grilling up your own meat.

A whole cut of raw beef is placed on the table accompanied by a knife and cutting board. After cutting the meat to their liking, customers are invited to marinate the strips in a bowl of fish sauce, chili, garlic and lemon juice.

Traditionally, the meat is cut thin and thrown on the fire for a couple of minutes. To each his own.

Porridge with beef shin

Perhaps the most renowned Cu Chi District is porridge with beef shin.

The sinewy meat is partially stir-fried in flavorful spices and then simmered in coconut juice. Finally, the leg is boiled in bone broth.

Once tender and tasty, the beef is served with a rice porridge flavored with green bean, white bean, taro, cassava, green papaya and turmeric.

All of the items combine to create wonderful textures and a host of competing flavors.

The delicacy is so popular that it has spread throughout HCMC. Customers who can’t make it to Cu Chi can enjoy the delicacy in downtown Saigon.
