Central highlanders greet spring with jugs of wine

Ethnic minority people in the Central Highlands possess a unique culture, which is highlighted by their springtime festivals and cuisine when people set aside their field work to enjoy the season.

As soon as villagers finish harvesting their crops (“Mnam Thun” in the E De language and “Mham Bar” or “Bri Rhair” in the M’Nong language), springtime knocks on their door. People dress up in new brocade clothes, organise many small parties and invite each other to share the joy of the season. It is also an occasion to show gratitude to the gods and ancestors, and to pray for good health.

The E De people are used to living next to forests, streams and rivers and their livelihood depends on nature. They make their living through cultivation and hunting so there is always a breath of nature in their traditional costumes and dishes.

E De costume is made of brocade. Unique and beautiful clothing is created by the skilful hands of women using simple tools. Brocade weaving is a profession that not only beautifies people, but also promotes the traditional craft.

According to the elder Y Hen in Cu Lie M’Nong village, Cu M’gar district, Dak Lak province, his people are aware of the need to preserve their traditional customs such as living in stilt houses, drinking Can wine out of a jug through pipes, beating gongs and weaving brocade.

Central Highlanders also have a special culinary culture of spicy dishes that are made entirely from natural ingredients.

The 100-year-old Tring village has the highest number of E De people in Buon Ho town, Dak Lak province. A cultural house was built with State support that provided villagers with a communal space and a newly-established brocade weaving co-operative has created more jobs for local residents.

Spring is also the time to welcome the Lunar New Year festival (Tet). This is when the central highlanders enjoy their most delicious foods and join in interesting folk games such as stick pushing, fencing and crossbow shooting.

An indispensable part of the festival is this resounding tonnes of gongs. “You will be very interested in the gong once you hear its sound,” said Y Te, who has a valuable collection of 30 gongs in various sizes. When the spring comes, people beat gongs to create a festive atmosphere and joyful spirit over all the villages.

Rare gem Tien Thanh like Mui Ne of old

Bamboo basket boats near Tien Thanh beach in the early morning as it is seen from Sand Hills Beach Resort & Spa

The tranquil beach of Tien Thanh is sometimes called the second Mui Ne in Binh Thuan Province by locals and tourists alike.

Tien Thanh, though, is more of a well-kept secret and in the new resort, tourists can enjoy the sea breeze, sunshine and relaxation without mingling with the growing crowds of Mui Ne, 15 kilometers down the road.

Tien Thanh is like  Mui Ne a decade ago when the popular destination was serene but now it is a tourist hotspot with so many resorts, shops and service facilities to cater for the influx of both local and international visitors and is now dubbed “Kingdom of Resorts.” Of course, this change is not appreciated by some tourists who want to escape to a weekend hideaway after a long week at the office or long-haul flights.

The Tien Thanh beach area does exactly that and presents a haven of serenity away from the hustle and bustle of Mui Ne and Phan Thiet City for short or long haul breaks. In Tien Thanh you are awoken from a deep sleep not by early morning crowds of visitors but the sound of gentle waves clapping against the shore.

Guests can view the sun rise from the east before strolling on the beach to look for shells when the tide recedes away, and they can watch locals catching fish, shrimp and snails near the shore. Many tourists take snapshots of bamboo basket boats swaying on the waves as fishermen try to net young lobsters for sale to shrimp farms near and far from Binh Thuan Province.

This little hidden gem is rare enough that there are not many resorts along the Tien Thanh beach area. One of them is Sand Hills Beach Resort & Spa which is situated around five kilometres from the heart of Phan Thiet City. This property owns 200 meters of private white-sand beach with 18 bungalow and villas in service on three hectares of evergreen plants and flowers.

The resort was designed to reflect an ancient Vietnamese garden residence, and to offer guests comfort, convenience and privacy.

The Tien Thanh beach area is easily accessible by taxi or honda om (motorbike taxi) that guests can take in the center of Phan Thiet or at the Suoi Cat Tourist Area.

After visiting the cave, many people recognised its irresistible magic, saying that this is really the most beautiful wonder of the Creator on earth.

Thien Duong was labelled the world’s most beautiful and magnificent cave when it was discovered by scientists from the British Cave Research Association in 2005.

Located in the middle of the Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park , about 4 km west of the Ho Chi Minh Road , the cave, which is believed to be formed hundreds of millions of years ago, is surrounded by underground streams and rocky mountains.

Thien Duong Cave is 30-100 metres wide, with the widest point measuring 150 metres. With a length of over 36 km, it is considered the longest dry cave in Asia .

After crossing an old forest, visitors see the entrance to the cave shaded by century-old trees and are then dazzled by the mysterious beauty of stalactite pillars, each dozens of metres in diameter, and grandiose rock arches, which are works made by the enchantment and sudden inspiration of the Creator over the past millions of years.

Vo Minh Tuan from Mai Dich, Hanoi , said that despite visiting many landscapes in the country and the world as well, he was still amazed at the magnetic beauty of Thien Duong Cave .

“I am also impressed with the professional and careful way of serving visitors here,” he said, adding that in the coming summer, he will surely take his family to the site.

Andy, a 30-year-old woman from the Netherlands , said she was really contented with the pure and natural beauty of the wonderful cave and also the highly professional services.

Visiting Thien Duong Cave was a great experience, Andy confided, adding that she will share her feelings with friends after returning to the Netherlands.

The Truong Thinh Group, the operator of Thien Duong Cave , the group has invested tens of billions of VND in a tourist project that aims to “draw visitors from all over the world”.

Quang Binh provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism said that since the beginning of this year, Thien Duong Cave has attracted more than 10,000 domestic and international visitors.

National park attracts Sarus Cranes

National park attracts Sarus CranesAfter carrying out a World Wildlife Fund-sponsored hydrology plan, Tram Chim National Park in the southern province of Dong Thap is seeing Sarus Cranes return in large numbers.

image 120110319092559 National park attracts Sarus Cranes

90 have landed at the park this month, compared with only 63 in February and 67 last March, Nguyen Van Hung, the national park’s director said.

Hung said two reasons explained the renewed attraction of the park to Sarus Cranes.

The Hydrology Management Project sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund and Can Tho University has improved the park’s ecosystem.

In the past, to prevent forest fire, water levels were kept too high, destroying grass and fish, a source of shelter and food for Sarus Cranes.

Dong Thap Province has also assigned over 100 soldiers to protect the park, which has reduced poaching and forest burning.

Occupying an area of 7,000 hectares, Tram Chim National Park is the representative of the Mekong Delta’s wetland ecosystem and a safe haven for Sarus Crane in dry seasons.

It is home to 231 bird species, including 16 rare ones.

Dong Khanh Hotel also a venue to dine

Dong Khanh Hotel began to serve customers in a new face earlier this year after undergoing big repair and upgrade. The Saigon hotel looks new, from its façade to the lobby, rooms and restaurants. Seen from outside, Dong Khanh remains ancient in its characteristic pink red color. Inside the hotel, the lobby with the reception area has the harmony between classical and modern architectural styles. Carpets on the corridor along rooms were all replaced to be thick and soft to make it more convenient for guests.

The rooms are elegantly and cozily designed, with new furnishings.

To Saigon residents and Chinesespeaking tourists, the Dong Khanh Hotel is a familiar name. The hotel with a history of more than 50 years reminds locals of an ancient Chinatown with bustling business activities. In the old days, Dong Khanh enjoyed the popularity in Saigon as a well-known Chinese restaurant. On Friday, the hotel still maintains its Chinese gastronomic style but also serves with other Asian and European styles to meet customers’ diverse demands.

To stay-in guests, Dong Khanh always has special incentives for groups of guests and guests who stay for a long term.

This year, Dong Khanh also strives to better serve guests and diners by upgrading services and serving parties of new styles. Its lunch buffet always has new dishes, with the menu changed every day.

From March 11, the hotel’s restaurant has served the “Hotpot Buffet” with more than 30 dishes on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. To thank customers and welcome the new buffet, the restaurant offers a 10% discount for 5-10 tickets bought, one Dong Khanh silver card for 11-15 tickets bought and one Dong Khanh golden card for at least 16 tickets bought. The buffet costs adults VND199,000 and children VND139,000. Big groups of diners to the buffets are charged with attractive prices.

Wedding parties are also a professional service of Dong Khanh. This year, the restaurant will offer special promotions, such as a 15% discount for a party with at least 10 tables at noontime, a 15% discount for a party with at least 10 tables in August, and a 10% discount for a night party on Monday to Friday from March until September. Aside from buffets and wedding parties, outside catering is also a strong service of the restaurant.

Dong Khanh in the last two years provided many successful parties outside, especially big parties with thousands of people taking part.

The Dong Khanh Hotel-Restaurant is located at 2 Tran Hung Dao B Street District 5, HCMC.
